seriously nutty workout smoothie.

turks and caicos yogaI have been on a quest to find something energizing to fuel my morning Insanity workouts (more details on my adventures in that coming soon [suffice to say, for now: I AM LOVING IT] ).

Eating before a morning workout will actually kickstart your metabolism for the day, contrary to traditional wisdom that exercising on an empty stomach means more fat-burning. Of course, it can be tough to find the right food to give you that kick of energy and keep ploughing through a workout - and something that won't leave you feeling heavy, nauseous, or lead to stitches in the side.

A nutrient-dense, protein-packed liquid is a great way to go, and if you can make it at home rather than buy a prepackaged product, all the better! When we're in control of the ingredients, we can better tap into exactly what's in there and how it's affecting our bodies. Many an experiment with cereal and juices allowed me to discover that the carbo-load (and all the excess sugar in juice) was not giving me the fuel I needed. Amping up the protein and healthy fat first thing in the morning has really helped me to power through a workout (and the whole day!). Experiment for your unique body and see what works best for you.

When we fuel up in the best way we can, we provide our muscles with more power to move and endure. Aim for something that will feel fueling, but not too filling. By hitting that sweet spot, we direct an ideal amount of energy to our physical activity without drawing too much excess to power an overwhelmed digestive tract. (Digestion is sort of like a 10km race for all those organs, too.) Great fuel means endurance, and not-too-taxing digestion. Revel in what your energized self can do -- and goodness, stay tuned for an upcoming post on Insanity. If you've not tried it, I highly recommend!
